Version 0.11.0 makes combat fairer and gives you more to use it on. A fight at your own level should now be a real contest, with food as the way to get through it. There are three new quests, Springport has turned green and filled with people, and there’s some new lore to dig into.

Fairer fights

Fights used to swing between hopeless and harmless on one tier of armour, and walking away could stop a monster hitting you at all. Neither is true now.

Walking isn’t a defenceA monster swings as soon as it’s ready, even mid-chase. Melee enemies walk as fast as you, unless they’re slow on purpose
Chance to hitWorked out afresh, so each tier of armour helps without making you untouchable. A level 10 wolf hits about 47% of the time with no armour and 26% in bronze. Iron no longer takes it nearly to nothing
FoodTakes 1 to 3 seconds to eat, depending on what it heals, and being hit doesn’t interrupt it. Your fight picks back up when you’ve finished
FullEat in a fight and you’re Full for a while, and can’t eat again until it wears off. The more of your health the food restored, the longer it lasts, up to a minute. Outside a fight, eat all you like
Monsters that give upThey heal over a few seconds instead of all at once, and you can still attack them on the way home
Inside Tullio’s farmhouse, just after a fight. The You panel shows 24 of 34 HP and “Full 17s”. The log reads: “You eat the cooked trout. It heals 7 HP.”, “You slash the bandit for 7.” and “The bandit collapses.”

Mend is now Mend other, and only heals another party member, so nobody has to train Magic to stay alive. Recall is a quick way out now: it takes four seconds to cast, and leaves you moonsick for ten seconds, not ten minutes.

Three new quests

The journal now shows what a quest asks of you before you start it: what you need, and the strongest monster you’ll have to beat.

The journal open on The Tax Collector: “Chancellor Valeria, who keeps the King’s purse in the palace in Springport, might have work for someone the Crown trusts.” Under Requirements: “Finish Trouble at the Crossing”. Under Recommended: “Able to defeat a level 20 monster”.

The Tax Collector

Chancellor Valeria keeps the King’s purse, and it needs filling.

A window in the palace: Chancellor Valeria says “I’m very busy. What is it you need?”, with the options to ask what a chancellor does, how the realm’s purse is, or “Is there anything I can do for the Crown?”

Nothing to Say

Old Tiberio has kept the lighthouse lamp at the end of Springport’s mole for forty years. He must get lonely out there.

A window over the sea in the lighthouse’s lamp room. Old Tiberio says: “The sea, mostly. Same as yesterday, same as tomorrow. The sky’s better. I’ve seen it go red, and one night it rained stars till morning.”

Toad in the Hole

A young frogman by the plank bridge over the Mire keeps chasing toads, and keeps missing.

A window over the Mire: “A little frogman swings a big net at a toad, and misses by a mile. The toad doesn’t even blink.”

Springport, green again

Springport was a field of paving and sealed houses, with people who never moved. Now it’s a city to walk round:

  • Grass and olive trees inside the walls, with balsa and oak to chop outside them.
  • Nineteen houses you can walk into, with people at home, and ten more citizens out in the streets.
  • People move about, except those serving you across a counter.
  • Ciro’s rickshaw goes round the ring road. Five coins buys a seat for a lap of all eight districts, and he tells you about each one as you pass.
  • Barry’s ferry rows you across the estuary to Alan’s camp for 30 coins.

A sea worth looking at

The water used to be one blue ~ from shore to shore, so sailing looked like sitting still. Now it has ripples, calm patches and two shades of blue, and small rocky islets south of Springport give you something to pass.

Open sea on all sides, drawn in two blues with ripples and gaps, and the player on a tiny islet of rock and sand. Other rocks break the water to the north-west and the south-east.

Some new lore

We’ve been thinking about the world’s history, and changed some of it. If you want to hear about it, go and talk to Steward Tobias, upstairs in Morningside Castle.

Looking around

The look cursor (k) knows about scenery as well. Olive trees, vines, crops, rock and water have names, and Enter examines them.

Shops and the Marketplace

  • Shops no longer undercut crafting. Some sold things for less than their ingredients cost, leaving little reason to make or trade them. Most of the Armoury’s iron gear has gone, along with raw catfish and bream and the Weavers’ Hall’s cloth, and 18 items have new prices.
  • Change a sell order’s price without cancelling it: press p on the order’s details, at any clerk. It’s free, and the order goes behind the others already at that price.
  • Guide prices are in the game. An item’s prices show its guide price, and the Sell tab has a Guide column.
  • Item descriptions are on the Marketplace page, under each item’s name.

And the rest

  • Choose who you’re talking to. Tab on the chat line moves between everyone near, your party and the last player you whispered with, and the prompt says which. No need to remember /p or /w.
  • Look back at your letters. A mailbox’s window has a Sent tab (Tab) with your newest 20. Your copy stays even if the other player deletes theirs.
  • Springport’s wines do something. A cup or a bottle of red makes you heavy-handed, a bottle of white numbs you, and the bottles can be drunk socially.
  • Clearer messages. It’s “You can’t reach Perla” now, not “the Perla”, and “You receive 100 gold coins”, without the capital. Crafting says what you’re doing (“You begin smelting a bronze bar…”) and counts only what you made.
  • Caravan guards no longer step into the water at the King’s Bridge.

Updating

Version 0.10.0 no longer connects, and the game will ask you to update. Download 0.11.0 from the download page and replace your old folder, copying across guest.toml if you play as a guest. The browser version is already up to date.

Thanks for playing. Come and say hello on Discord, and tell us how the fights feel.
